Conservation of
Zhongshan Street
Location: Hangzhou, China
In 2007, the government of Hangzhou province invited architect Wang Shu to direct the old town conservation project of Zhongshan Street. Zhongshan Street is a well-known historical and cultural avenue enjoys the most prominent historical position in Hangzhou. Wang Shu reconstructed all the old buildings without demolishment, keeping the historic wooden constructions in a modernized way. Shu’s design creates a truly lifestyle close to the local people, maintaining the important carrier of local culture, it also increases the development of tourism and business.

Wang Shu (1963 - ) is a Chinese architect based in Hangzhou. He is the dean of the School of Architecture of the China Academy of Art. Wang creates modern buildings making use of traditional materials and applying older techniques. In 2012, Wang became the first Chinese citizen to win the Pritzker Prize, the world's top prize in architecture. →
